Repair & Maintenance
Will you tell me if the door should not be used?
Yes, plainly and at the door. A slack or frayed cable, a gap in a spring coil, a door hanging crooked, a bracket pulling out of the framing or an opener that fails the reversal test are the kinds of findings that put an item in the stop-use group. When that happens you see the reason yourself, the door is left resting in a safe spot with the opener unhooked, and the fix is written up and quoted so it can be booked. Should I lubricate the tracks?
No. Tracks should be clean and dry. Rollers are meant to roll along the track on their own bearings, and a film of lubricant on the track collects grit, thickens in the cold and makes the rollers slide and drag instead. Wipe the tracks with a rag and put the lubricant where it belongs: on the hinge pins, the roller bearings, the spring coils and the bearing plates at the ends of the torsion shaft. Garage Door Tune-Up
My door has springs along the sides, not above it. Is the reset the same?
The principle is the same but the sequence differs. With side springs the door is first opened all the way and clamped, because that is the position where the springs carry no load; the cables are then checked over their pulleys and evened up at the clips. The technician also checks that a containment cable runs through each spring, which stops a broken spring flying across the garage, and fits one if it is missing. Off-Track Garage Door Reset
Will the new section match the colour of the rest of the door?
It will match the factory colour your door was made in, which is not quite the colour your door is today, because paint fades in sun and weather. A fresh section can look noticeably brighter than its neighbours, and that difference may not go away with time. If the contrast bothers you, the whole door can be painted with an exterior product suited to the finish. Ask to see the current colour chip against your door first. Garage Door Panel Replacement

Springs & Hardware
Should the track be lubricated too?
No. The track is meant to be clean and dry so the wheels roll rather than slide. Grease or spray in the raceway collects dust, sand and, in winter, salt and slush, forming a paste that grinds the wheels and can let a roller skid instead of turn. The technician cleans the track and leaves it dry; at home, a wipe with a cloth and an occasional sweep of the bottom few inches is all the track wants. Garage Door Roller Replacement
Why is there a gap opening between two panels as the door goes up?
The two panels at that joint are no longer being held together on one side. A hinge that has cracked through, pulled its screws or lost its pin lets the panels hinge open around the remaining hardware, and the gap shows as they round the curve where the joint flexes most. Replacing the failed hinge, and checking its partner on the other end, brings the panels back into line. Garage Door Hinge Replacement
What happens during the visit?
The opener is disconnected and the door clamped. The technician identifies the track type and layout, checks each vertical run for plumb, spacing and fixing, looks at the jamb wood, the curve, the flag brackets, the horizontal runs and their hangers, and how each roller sits. Damaged pieces are dressed or replaced, brackets refixed into sound wood, the geometry reset, rollers reseated, springs re-tensioned if they were unloaded, and the door balanced and the opener tested. Can I lift the door by hand while a cable is off?
Leave it. With one cable slack the door is being carried on one side only, so it is unbalanced and may bind or drop unevenly when moved. The technician arrives with clamps and a method for taking the door's weight before anything is moved, and that is the moment to lift it. Until then a stationary door is exactly what you want. Openers & Access
How do you tell whether it is the opener or the door?
By separating them. With the door closed, the emergency release is pulled so the opener is out of the picture, and the door is lifted by hand. A balanced door rises without strain, hangs where you leave it around waist height and stays open at the top. If it does, the opener is at fault. If it is heavy, drifts or binds, the door is the cause and the opener was only reporting the strain. This one check prevents a great many wrong repairs. Garage Door Opener Diagnosis and Repair
Can my chain drive be made quieter without changing it to a belt?
Yes, a fair amount. Correct chain tension removes the slap. A new sprocket and chain remove the clack. Tight hangers, a level rail and a snug header bracket remove the rattle that travels through the framing into rooms above. Nylon rollers and lubricated hinges on the door quiet the door itself, which is often louder than the drive. A vibration isolator between the head and the hangers helps where the ceiling carries sound into a bedroom. Chain-Drive Opener Repair
Is a belt drive harder to repair than a chain drive?
No, just different. The belt is lighter, runs dry and is replaced as one length with a clip, where a chain has links and takes grease. The tensioning at the trolley works the same way on both, and the sprocket, idler and trolley are similar parts. What a belt drive rewards is care with tension and a straight rail, because it is chosen for quiet and shows any fault as noise. Belt-Drive Opener Repair
Will the buttons built into my car work with the new opener?
Nearly always, yes. The in-car transmitter is taught to the new operator using the learn button on the head unit, much like a handheld remote. Some older vehicles predate the newest rolling-code systems and pair through a small repeater or bridge that the technician can supply. Bring the car into the driveway on installation day so it can be programmed and tested before the technician leaves. Garage Door Opener Replacement

Installation & Upgrades
What should I move before the installation visit?
Clear vehicles, bicycles and stored items from the door's path and from the areas beside the jambs. Make overhead track and spring locations accessible, and identify anything delicate nearby. The technician can explain the required working area during measurement, especially where shelving, ceiling storage or a shared driveway affects access. Sectional Garage Door Replacement
How should I prepare the garage for installation?
Move vehicles out and clear floor space across the full width of the opening plus a useful working area inside. Remove hanging items, bicycles and storage that intrude into the track or ceiling zone. Provide access to electrical controls and keep pets away from the work area. The installer can identify any unusually large staging space needed for wide sections beforehand. Insulated Steel Garage Door Installation
How is the new door tested after installation?
Technicians cycle it by hand to assess balance, cable tracking, roller travel, clearances, and seal contact. After the operator is connected, they set the open and close limits, confirm the manual release, interrupt the photoelectric beam, and conduct the prescribed contact-reversal check. Hardware and reinforcement receive a final visual review with the door closed and raised. Wind-Rated Garage Door Replacement
Why is spring and cable work handled by trained technicians?
Springs store the force that offsets the door's weight, and lift cables transfer that force through drums or pulleys. Installation requires the door to be secured, the correct components identified and tension applied with purpose-made tools. A trained method keeps the loaded system controlled while balance, cable seating and attachment points are adjusted together for the completed door. Carriage-House Garage Door Installation
